"I am still hurting for my Grand father. He told me years ago he was in the Navy. He was in it for 15 years. His name was Samuel Gardner. He was a mechanic that worked on the Submarine. We all called him Daddy, his children and his Grand Children. I was a very curious girl and I watched him think. so one day I asked him, daddy why do you have that far away look in your eyes. He told me his story. He said he saved over one hundred men from drowning in the bottom of the ocean during World War two. You see the white officers could not get the submarine to swim to the top of the ocean. They tried for hours. Daddy said it began to get hot and the white men began to panic. Daddy said he asked them to let him tried. They told him no, and told him, you don't know. Daddy said he walked away. He said he was preparing to drown, when the Commander found praying. The Commander told him to try. They all left him. Daddy said they never said a word to him. Within 10 minutes it was fix. Daddy said he used a crow bar to fix the Submarine. The Commander took the credit for my Grandfather saving his comrades. I looked at my Grandfather and he had tears streaming down his face. I was 12 years old. I will never forget that day."
